The MVP Leader

The NFL post season is in full swing, and in a few short weeks we will know which team will be crowned Super Bowl Champions. We will also know which player will be named the NFL’s Most Valuable Player.  Admittedly, I am a die-hard football fan! In my humble opinion, I think it is the ultimate team sport. You have 22 men on the field at one time: 11 on defense and 11 on offense. They all have very different and distinct roles and assignments. Each player on the field has his own unique purpose. The quarterback is often described as the captain of the offense, and usually the middle linebacker calls the defensive plays. Now, if the quarterback and middle linebacker operate outside of their roles and assignments during the game, you will have a huge problem. You will never see a middle linebacker dropping back to throw a pass or a quarterback blitzing the offense and trying to make a tackle behind the line of scrimmage. If you do, you will probably see two talented players being extremely ineffective because they’re simply out of place because it’s not what their workmanship calls for them to do.

In the same way, God created us by design and with a unique purpose and gift. He dictates to us why we exist. In Ephesians Paul reminds us, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” God is the one who gave us our purpose, and He is the one who knows our destiny before we reach it. If we live, operate, or minister outside of our purpose and reason we were created, then we are guaranteed to live a life that is ineffective and void of meaning. Walking in the purpose God has designed for you is how you fulfill your reason for being. You matter to God and to the people whom you’re called to minister to. No matter where you are or if you’re getting paid or not, God has created you for this journey you’re on. Never strive to be like the ministry next door; be committed to being the ministry God has called you to be. If you try being something you are not; you will only be a cheap copy of a great original.

Success in life and ministry is not limited to only those with an abundance of financial resources or special talents.  True success is available to anyone who is willing to commit to being intentional about positioning themselves to maximize the gifts God has place in their lives.  Proverbs 16:3 says, “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed.” In John Maxwell’s book, Your Road Map for Success[1], he shares three unique insights into what it means be successful and an MVP Leader:

  1. Know your purpose in life.  You weren’t created to simply exist and take up space.  God has a plan and a purpose for your life.  Identify His plan and own it.
  2. Grow to your maximum potential.  When you discover your purpose, you will maximize your potential. 
  3. Sow seeds that benefit others.  Maximum impact happens when the leader is willing to invest in others.  It’s called discipleship. 

It’s my prayer that you will commit to pursuing the greatness within you and become the MVP Leader God has purposed for you to be.  I want to see you win the Super Bowl for your ministry by developing a program that is authentic, relevant, inspirational, and strategically driven by design. You were made for this moment!
